 McScience releases the new ‘K5500 PLX’ PV module inspection system

 Jordan Choi, a general manager at McScience, has announced that “With the release of K5500, our company became the only business firm in Korea to produce both the PL (photoluminescence) and the EL (electroluminescence) equipment,” and that “we believe that this will give us an advantage in the recent market where producing PERC solar PV modules is a growing trend.”

 McScience has recently announced that they have released a solar module inspection system for image measurements that does not require a physical contact to the modules. The company is known as one of the pioneering manufacturers of measurement equipment for OLED, solar panels and flexible displays based upon their original electrical measurement technology and data analysis algorithm.
 McScience has a high expectation on K5500, especially with the fact that this product has already been applied to an LG production line; LG is one of the leading solar PV module manufacturers.

‘K5500 PLX’ ? Contactless Module Inspection Equipment

 Regarding the launch of the new product, Jordan Choi, a general manager at McScience, has explained that “the previous ‘K5500 EL (electroluminescence)’ could only conduct image measurements with a physical contact, but the new model for PL (photoluminescence) image measurement is developed to work without contact, after a few years of research with the demands of our clients.”
 The ‘K5500 PV module inspection system (EL)’ conducts a detailed analysis to find any defects that can form during a manufacture process in order to increase the solar module quality. There are numerous cases of K5500 assignment in the businesses, one of the customers being Hanwha Q Cells that has its headquarters in China. Currently the EL inspection systems are dominating the market but it is expected that more will be using the PL systems due to the high demand.
 The ‘K5500 PLX PV module inspection system’, developed by McScience in response to the demands, also conducts a detailed analysis to find the defects in the modules to increase the product quality. It is mainly applicable to crystalline silicon solar modules. K5500 PLX’s strength also lies in the fact that there is a built-in defect auto-detection algorithm that extracts and analyzes the defect images within the automated production procedure. It turns out that the device has already been applied to one of the LG Electronics’ production lines and succeeded in reducing the cost through an accurate and rapid inspection. Mr. Choi stated that “like the case of LG Electronics, if the modules are assembled with back contact solar cells it is difficult to connect them to the laminator terminals, therefore making it impossible to use the EL equipment,” and that “however by the use of our PL equipment and its auto-detection algorithm it became possible to distinguish the defective modules, thus achieving a cost reduction.

Competing with the up-to-trend, high quality equipment

 The new ‘K5500 PLX’ is not only applicable to crystalline silicon based solar modules but also P-type, N-type, back contact type and PERC type modules depending on the customer preferences.
 Among these, the voids formed within the PERC type solar cells can only be detected through photoluminescence which highlights the importance of the PL measurement devices. Not to mention there is a worldwide trend of assembling solar modules with the PERC solar cells which would further raise the demand for this device.
 Regarding this, Mr. Choi said that “more than 50% of the businesses in Taiwan are already producing the PERC type solar modules and there is a growing tendency to the PERC cells in Korea as well,” and that “as the only company in Korea that deals with both the EL and the PL measurement equipment, we expect our products will be very competitive in the market given the growing trend towards the PERC solar cells mentioned before.”
 It is told that McScience plans to create a new market through the release of PL equipment. Mr. Choi stated that “it is expected that more manufacturers will start introducing the EL and the PL technologies into their production procedures.  Mr. Choi also added that “McScience’s products are becoming to be well regarded for the accuracy and the efficiency of the measurements together with the careful considerations about the user experience and the industrial exterior designs,” and that “we are also concentrating on the development of the measurement devices for OLED displays (lifetime, IVL), solar panels (efficiency, EQE, EL, PL, LBIC, LID), batteries (cycler, impedance) as well as spectrometers and colorimeters.”
